home | accommodation on the southern beaches | about the southern beaches | travel resources

The Gold Coast region encompasses 5,000 sq km with 70 km of coastline - and some of the most famous beaches are located between Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta.

The Gold Coast City Council patrols more beaches than any other Australian local authority, and the focus on beach safety contributes to making the Gold Coast such a favourite destination for family holidays.

  • Magnificent views from BreakFree Mediterranean (looking north) and Burleigh Surf Apartments (looking south).

Keep in mind that some beaches can be dangerous so it is important to respect beach safety - always swim between the red & yellow flags on patrolled beaches, and do not swim alone or surf at beaches that are not patrolled by Lifeguards or Lifesavers.

Mermaid Beach

The surf at Mermaid Beach is somewhat quieter than Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. It is a great family beach with sheltered picnic areas, bike tracks and a childrens playground. The nearby Nobby Beach and Miami also have relaxing beach fronts with BBQ and picnic areas.

You will find some of the most prestigious real estate on the Gold Coast in Mermaid Beach. Hedges Avenue is a sought after address with multi-million dollar mansions and direct beach frontage.

Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Heads, half way between Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise, has always been a popular location for family holidays. It offers a wonderful National Park and more beaches. Surf is great and the beach is patrolled every day of the year. You also have great views of the surrounding coastline.

North Burleigh is known for excellent fishing along the beach and near the rocks.

In Burleigh Heads National Park you will discover rainforest, eucalypt forest, pandanus groves, tussock grassland, coastal heath, mangroves, creeks, rocky foreshore and beaches. Visitors may be lucky enough to spot whales breaching in coastal waters during winter and spring, see white-bellied sea-eagles riding the ridge updrafts, or watch birdwing butterflies feeding on rainforest nectars in mid-summer.

Palm Beach

If you are looking for accommodation with absolute beachfront access then look no further than Palm Beach - twice the cleanest beach winner.

There is a nice boardwalk with table and chairs for a relaxing lunch on the beach. You can fish during the day or night for dart and bream. The beach is fairly secluded and great for those nice relaxing walks.

Currumbin

The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the world's largest collection of Australian native animals. With over 27 hectares of landscaped surrounds and bushland catering for over 1400 mammals, birds and reptiles, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique natural experience.

Visitor activities include feeding of birds and kangaroos, , bird show, snake show and crocodile presentation.

The Sanctuary is also dedicated to wildlife conservation and welfare with ongoing education programs, research projects and a Community Wildlife Hospital.

Coolangatta

Coolangatta lies on the border of Queensland and NSW. Gold Coast Airport which is the major gateway to the region is only a few kilometers away. Greenmount and Rainbow Bay are popular beaches with the locals. They are both north facing beaches and provide sheltered conditions for swimming.

The famous Kirra Point, a few kilometers north of Coolangatta, offers waves for beginners through to champion surfers. Kirra is a very popular surf beach, and there are 3 local surf life saving clubs.

Across the NSW Border to Kingscliff - only 15 minutes from Gold Coast Airport

The beachside community of Kingscliff is a relaxed village with an abundance of cafes and local eateries. Marine Parade offers trendy al fresco cafes which line the main street, only a step from rolling ocean beaches.

Located within the Northern Rivers region of Northern New South Wales, Kingscliff is the perfect base to explore the natural beauty of the Tweed River waterways, the national parks and the pristine beaches. Other attractions include Tropical Fruit World and Mt Warning National Park, not to mention the theme parks of the Gold Coast only a short drive north.

Located 2 kilometres south of the town of Kingscliff, the village of Salt is perfectly poised to provide the ultimate sea change lifestyle or that perfect holiday destination. When complete, the village will feature a range of beachfront, beachside and riverside homes, park side townhouses and a range of tourist accommodation.

At the heart of Salt will be its central village which will feature an Outrigger Beachfront Hotel, Peppers Salt resort, cafes, restaurants, supermarket, tavern, a 1.3 hectare park, surf lifesaving facility and parking for almost 300 cars.
