  • Australia facts and figures.

Australia's population is about 20.5 million (2006) with a growth rate of 0.93%. Aussies can expect to live until the age of 80.

The first Australians are known as Aborigines, the word "aboriginal" meaning "native". They have populated Australia for up to 50,000 years, or roughly 200 times longer than "white" Australians have been here. Today they make up 2.4% of Australia's population.

Land mass is 32 times larger than the UK. The eastern most point in Australia is Cape Byron in NSW. The most southerly point is obviously in Tasmania and the most westerly point is Steep Point in WA. Cape York in Tropical North Queensland is as far north as you get. The lowest point in Australia is Lake Eyre at -15 metres, and the highest point is Mount Kosciuszko at 2,229 metres.

  • Famous Australians.

There are lots of famous Australians (famous outside Australia that is), and it is fair to say that most of these are involved with sports or entertainment.

Not everyone knows that Errol Flynn was Tasmanian or that the Bee Gees grew up in Brisbane, but everyone knows Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan). In the last 20 years or so Australia has produced more international entertainers than ever before, including Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Kylie, Olivia Newton John, INXS and erm .... the Wiggles.

Australians love sport. Don Bradman was the undisputed master of cricket between 1928 and 1948, and he is yet to be challenged some 60 years on. Australian heroes from the 60s and 70s included Ron Clarke, Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Dawn Fraser. More recently, the Socceroos qualified for the World Cup quarter finals, and players like Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell are household names in Europe. Ian Thorpe dominated freestyle swimming at the Sydney Olympics.

Many indigenous Australians have done well in sports, including Cathy Freedman, Lionel Rose and Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

  • Famous Australians (continued).

Not all famous Australians are people, and Skippy the kangaroo is probably more famous than anyone. Then there is Qantas the flying kangaroo of course.

Horse racing is also a popular sport, and Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday in November is of course Public Holiday in Melbourne. The two most famous winners are Phar Lap (1930) and Makybe Diva (2004, 2005, 2006). Bart Cummings has trained 11 Melbourne Cup winners.
